Edinburgh Visitors Guide

Merchant Square

Merchant Square was originally built in the 1800's as part of Glasgow's Fruit Market, and has always been a focal point of the Merchant City.

Merchant Square is now refurbished and home to various bars, cafes and restaurants, Merchant Square benefits from a central location close to some of the most exclusive retail shops in Glasgow.

Still imbued with the history of the area's dominating Victorian architecture, the Merchant City is once again one of the most prestigious parts of the City - although now a cosmopolitan ambiance pervades the surrounding cobbled streets.

A stunning covered courtyard provides a dramatic centrepiece equally striking in bright summer sunlight or as welcome shelter for winter shoppers - whatever the time of year, a drink or some food at one of the surrounding bistros and bars allows the visitor ample opportunity for that most continental of past times - people watching.

Merchant Square is located on Candleriggs in The Merchant City just minutes away from the centre of Glasgow’s main shopping area – Buchanan Street and the famous George Square.

It is also only a 5 minute walk to the nearest train station at Queen Street. There is ample parking in nearby parking bays or NCP car parks.

There is also easy access to M8 motorway.
